by Mega Ran
After the success of their 2015 EP release and tours of the US and Europe, Phoenix, AZ based rappers Mega Ran and Bag of Tricks Cat have returned with a follow up, the aptly titled “Emerald Knights II.”
The album is a stark contrast to the darker themes and deep thought of the first release, and features Ran and Felix going harder than ever on tracks targeting the state of America (If I Could), relationships (Heatstroke and Afraid to Love), and of course, the game.
Wack rappers get it the worst, as tracks like “Emerald Knights A Go, “Rappers In Their Feelings” and “Get Out The 90’s” take playful shots while encouraging their contemporaries and peers to step it up.
I am Random. I am Mega Ran. You are the music.
If you put videogames, the ’80s, hip-hop, soul music, jazz and standup comedy into a blender and hit “puree,” you’d have something close to The Mega Ran Experience.
The Penn State graduate and self-proclaimed “Teacher/Rapper/Hero” made waves by by combining 8-bit videogame sounds and hard-hitting hip-hop tracks, and has become a trailblazer in the budding genres of chiptune and nerdcore hip-hop, while maintaining a career as a middle school teacher.
Ran’s first album “The Call” was a critical success, featuring tracks with some of the underground’s most respected heads. Ran cut his teeth in the city of Philadelphia as a moonlighting emcee and producer, performing, freestyle rapping, producing and later engineering at a studio. After relocating to Phoenix, competing in the Scribble Jam emcee battle championships and taking an early exit, Ran almost quit before he was even started, when a creative lightning bolt struck, and a fire was lit.
Retro videogames were the catalyst. Random began the transformation into Mega Ran, his alter-ego, an ode to the classic video game character Mega Man. After creating a tribute album and receiving an unprecedented level of support and blessing from Capcom to continue, Ran was reborn and became a trailblazer in the budding “nerdcore” and chiptune subgenres, while coining his own term to describe what he had done, “Chip-Hop.”

This is the end. Space has expanded beyond recognition. All inhabitable planets are so far away from one another that all intelligent life in the universe has lost contact with one another and continued trade and commerce is impossible.
At the known center of the universe, a void forms.
It is almost inconceivably small at first. But as time passes, it grows. Everything the Void touches ceases to exist. First a couple million miles. Then hundreds of millions. Then trillions. All matter within its grasp is eradicated.
As it reaches inhabited planets, the top minds gather to find some way to stop this unending nothingness. All manner of experiments and weaponry are launched into the Void to stop its slow but steady destruction of all matter in the universe.
As it envelops each person, continent, planet, system and galaxy in the universe, a faint sound is heard across the cosmos. For the first time in recorded history, an actual sound wave echoes through space. Each species hears it in their own language, shortly before being consumed by this unending Void.

This EP is based off The Travis Walton UFO incident was an alleged abduction of an American logger by a UFO on November 5, 1975, while working with a logging crew in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona. Walton reappeared after a five-day search.
According to Walton, on November 5, 1975 he was working with a lumbering crew in the Sitgreaves National Forest near Snowflake, Arizona. While riding in a truck with six of his coworkers, they encountered a saucer-shaped object hovering over the ground approximately 110 feet away, making a high-pitched buzz. Walton claims he left the truck and approached it, when a beam of light suddenly appeared from the craft, knocking him unconscious. The other six men were frightened and supposedly drove away. Walton claimed that he awoke in a hospital-like room, being observed by three short, bald creatures. Walton claimed that he fought with them until a human wearing a helmet led Walton to another room, where he blacked out when three other humans put a clear plastic mask over his face. Walton has claimed he remembers nothing else until he found himself walking along a highway, with the flying saucer departing above him.

Your support allows me to keep making music, for which I am profoundly grateful.
80’s synthpop is in my blood, but I mostly listen to EDM these days. My songs draw from both, fleshed out with piano accompaniment. Anyone who took music lessons as a kid calls themselves “classically trained,” but I stuck with it, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. After graduation, I left Beethoven and Brahms behind to pursue my first musical inspiration, Depeche Mode.
