Upon opening this album, the name alone draws your attention. “The World Beyond”. “Unlocking the Portal” opens you to this vast place of angelic sonic ore, building slowly but powerfully with scarce sounds and vocals. The second track, “The Crystal Palace”, instantly immerses you in the world of Akara with playful strings and wind instruments as the lead over deeper cello. A faint-but-steady drum beat gives the feeling of entering a place anew, taking your time to soak it all in but too overwhelmed to dally. The electronic production element of this album then becomes very clear on the next track, “Adoration of the Light” which instantly begins with distorted drums and synths. A darker track, Weidema’s vocals give this song an almost tribal atmosphere to it.
“Resonance” opens with subtle harp notes over horns, having a “dark” feeling as well but more-so of a dark that has past- it would be a perfect soundtrack for after some sort disaster has happened. Perhaps this is the feel Akara is going for with the transition. A dance-able drum beat then enters, followed by deep synth behind entrancing mandolin strings. The middle of the album is aptly named “Evensong”, which happens to be my favorite. It’s purely strings and Weidema’s celestial voice, with just the perfect amount of production to turn this song into an uplifting, melodic epic that begs contemplation. It transitions perfectly into “Sky Dancer”, a dance-able track, layered with beautiful strings, vocals, deep synth and a faint but solid drum beat accentuated with clapping. “Remembering the Stars Into Being” begins with a beautiful use of the harpsichord, creating a short but bridging gap between the bulk of the album and the last tracks.
Created by a conservatory-trained classical composer turned electronica producer, Akara’s mystical dancefloor symphonies are songs of the luminous extradimensional beings, sung across the veil of reality.

This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound. Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their scintillating new long-player, TK2, being released September 7, 2010 on Nat Geo Music. He is one of the leading and most traveled artists from Russian and Ukrainian psychedelic scene. AstroPilot plays at many international festivals, outdoors and indoors events in Russia, Ukraine, Australia, Greece, France, Portugal, Israel, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Czech republic, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Belorussia. In 2008 “Mystique” album saw the light of day.
In 2009 he created Altar Records and works officially since 2010 as label manager.
In 2011 he released his second album “Magique”.
The plans for the future are including a new album entitled “Magnetique” and a part II to follow “In Dub”, a ‘psy-dub’ album released under the ‘Dj Zen’ acronym.
Astral Waves is Dj Zen aka Gabriel D. from Quebec, Canada. Originally from France he moved to north America in 1996 with a full CD bag. He was determined to meet party people from there to spin the music for which his heart beaten so hard: Goa trance. Shortly after meeting organizers in Quebec, he spinned in after hours, clubs and raves all around the place. He was also making backdrops to decorate places, hand painted t-shirts and always had a kiosk to sell a bunch of CD’s. After having spinning for 4 years and organizing “Natura” wonderful parties with his brother, he settled up his first music studio in 1999 using Reason 1.0 and Acid 3 to make some remixes from some well known bands like Juno Reactor.
Retired from Montreal for 3 years, he went to Costa-Rica to play music and paint backdrops with Transelastica collective. Then he got a kid and had time to set up Sunline Records and Digitalys Studios to start to make music and artwork for illustrating CD covers for Sunline Records and also for Kagdila, Suntrip, Peak and Avigmatic Records.
In 2005 he was working on his first album entitled “Mystique”, learning techniques and tips from great artists such as Astrix and Nuclear Ramjet. In 2006-2007 he played a few live acts at festivals with congas (percussion) and vocalist Ina layed her nice voice in the background.
