I entered the world of MONACO when I caught wind that creator Andy Schatz was on the hunt for licensable solo piano music in the vein of old ragtime-infused silent films. We struck up a conversation and I realized that I simply needed to write this score. When would I EVER be exploring that genre of music in a videogame again???

As with most of my videogame soundtracks, what’s presented here is in some cases quite different from the in-game score. But nonetheless I hope it proves sufficiently naughty, jaunty and/or outright whacky enough to make you smile.

FOR A LIMITED TIME, the OST will be bundled with the bonus album, THE GENTLEMAN’S PRIVATE COLLECTION, featuring bonus tracks, covers and re-imaginings of the score by the following artists:

Chipzel Cris Gale Laura Intravia Malukah MegaRan Peter Hollens Tina Guo Tomoki Miyoshi Videri String Quartet Viking Jesus William Kage

Austin Wintory began his obsession with composing back when he was ten years old, when he discovered Jerry Goldsmith’s scores to Patton and A Patch of Blue. After a busy high school career composing for the student orchestras, Austin went on to study at NYU and USC with composers Morten Lauridsen, Charles Fussell, and Erica Muhl. Never satisfied with working in a single medium, Austin has worked in the concert world, film music, video games, and miscellaneous others.

In March 2012, the PlayStation3 game Journey was released, after three years of work. The game instantly became Sony’s fastest-selling PlayStation title, and the soundtrack album debuted on the Billboard charts higher than any original score in gaming history. In December 2012, more history was made when it was announced that Journey had become the first-ever Grammy-nominated videogame score. The score subsequently won an Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences D.I.C.E. award, two British Academy Awards, a Spike TV VGA, and IGN’s “Overall Music of the Year,” along with six G.A.N.G. nominations and host of others.

Production of Kernel 2 began in earnest on August 1st, 2012. Committed to honoring Bokuzen Wakahisa’s original vision, OttO Vector conceived the project as a canonical sequel to Ondori Kernel. The two-pronged, simultaneous attack consisted of both outlining a story and painting its audio landscape- in tandem. Per Ginseng, “A brief stage/level diagram was an absolute MUST. To effectively convey the ‘sound’ of a specific location, we had to understand a bit about the place. Everybody knows that a [video game] ‘dungeon’ sounds different than the clouds, underwater, a desert, etc.” Following the time-twist element that concluded Wakahisa’s masterpiece, the team decided to base Kernel 2 in the prototypical modern-day metropolis of Townsburgville City. Kernel’s mystical geta evolved as magical sneakers, the nameless daimyo as Dimitri L. Pubo, and the imposing legion of evil bosses multiplied tenfold. Kernel would once again be tasked with defending his city’s inhabitants from Dimitri’s wicked schemes.*

*Fun fact: Each of Dimitri’s minions were based on actual characters from OttO Vector’s varied (and random) encounters throughout the years.

With Kernel 2’s story outlined, Sonic and Ginseng proceeded to score the virtual world’s music. “The classic games’ music were essentially ‘pop’ songs, distilled down to 30-second, repeating loops. They were catchy! After playing these games for days, they got in your head- they stuck with you,” said Sonic. “We expanded the themes [from “Kernel Suite”] into full-fledged songs, and these became the background pieces for each ‘level’ of the game.”

Nurtured by the proud traditions of Motown, techno and legendary rock influences, Detroit natives OTTO VECTOR challenge and blur the prototypical pop/rock boundaries with their uniquely accessible synth-rock musical style. Formed in 2002 to explore the universe of electronic songwriting, Mike “Sonic” Glaser and Andrew “Ginseng” Lemanek experimented with technology and pop to create their personal brand of sound. With a desire to both expand their sonic palette and to perform as a live band, the duo recruited fellow musicians Dan Lee, William Daviddi, vocalist Renee’ Miller, and a never-ending stream of gadgets and electronic devices.
Hitting their hometown stages continually since 2004, OttO Vector has performed from coast-to-coast and beyond. The band has played The Warped Tour in Detroit, made appearances at Toronto’s NorthByNortheast (NXNE), and was a three-time TOP 5 National Finalist in mtvU’s Best Music on Campus. OttO Vector’s songs were featured on the 2010 season of MTV’s The Challenge: Fresh Meat II, and their “Charlie Mix” video was nominated for tunelabTM “2011 Music Video of the Year” in December 2011. OttO Vector’s “EP 604” was nominated for Outstanding Electronic/Dance Recording in the 2013 Detroit Music Awards, won Best Pop Band, Best Pop Video (“Charlie Mix”) and Band of the Year at 2013’s Indie Music Channel Awards in Los Angeles, and was named BEST INDIE BAND OF THE YEAR by the Los Angeles Times (2013).

OttO Vector has released the albums No. 9 North (2013), Kernel 2: Dimitri’s Revenge [OST] (2013), EP 604 (2011), 14 North Cedgwick (2010), 5 Bits To Byte (2007), 3-D Odyssey (2006) and dv2.5 (2004), and was featured on FEED (The Movie Soundtrack) (2006).

Special thanks to the Hitbox guys: Lexie, Matt, and Woodley, and also to our biggest supporter and friend, Mary. This is my first completed musical project. It’s inspired by chiptunes, IDM, and snes-era RPGs.

The Dustforce soundtrack is reminiscent of old Super Nintendo games, but with a modern sheen. Just like the game itself, it’s relaxing and pretty on the outside, but filled with energy and intricacies underneath. I hope you like it!

Hello! I am Terence. I make things with my friends at Hitbox Team. Previously, I made the soundtrack to our game Dustforce, and scored the Double Fine Adventure documentary. Right now I’m working on code and music for our next game, Spire.

Metal Case Mental Case tells the story of an old-fashioned and forgotten library computer named Vidboy, who falls in love with Paisley, a girl who turns to him instead of the newer, fancier computers. It begins somewhat lighthearted, but quickly turns sour when they realize that love between a human and computer will never work.

Vidboy is an old 1986 Compaq Deskpro 386 Personal Computer that sits in a forgotten corner of a library. In its free time it likes to make music with its friend Paisley, a girl it is very fond of. Together they team up to bring you some sweet chiptune-esque music.

Original soundtrack to the Video Game Aeternum, A bullet hell shooter by Brooks Bishop, on Xbox live indie games. This is the PLUS version with 2 additional original tracks and 2 remixes by D34D, and VikingGuitar feat. Stemage.

Jesse Bishop is a computer music producer known for his video game music remixes, and modern synthwave project “Street Cleaner.” Jesse cut his teeth in the late 90’s using DOS software tracker FastTracker II and later ModPlug Tracker, joining a few very short lived Gabber Tracker groups. In the early 2000’s Jesse discovered video game arrangement and since then, he has appeared on numerous video game arrangement compilations and competed in several video game arrangement competitions.

Jesse’s big break came in the form of the soundtrack for Aeternum, a doujin style bullet hell shooter created by close friend Brooks Bishop. Jesse broke from his mold to create a large pop music soundtrack that had the novelty of chiptunes, and the wide audio range of modern larger budgeted game soundtracks.

Now producing under the moniker “Street Cleaner,” Jesse has found success writing the soundtrack to an 80’s film franchise that never existed. With this new Synthwave/Outrun direction, Jesse looks forward to getting back into video game music production.

This was a very special project to be a part of. THE BANNER SAGA was my first real experience with Kickstarter, and there is something very different about being “hired” by 20,042 backers instead of a single team. The sense of responsibility with this score felt hugely magnified by that. So I hope I have delivered something worthy because not one day passed in the year and a half of work that I didn’t think about that trust.

With that said, I LOVE this game and the wonderful Stoic team. So unlike anything I’ve ever worked on, and probably the most challenging score I’ve ever written. One couldn’t have dreamt up something better to follow the surreal experience of JOURNEY.
