After seven years, hundreds of hours and too many song revisions to count, the Black Mesa Soundtrack is finally released. Faced with the impossible task of creating a soundtrack that will pay homage to Half Life 1 and the millions of fans worldwide, I have made production choices that some will most likely question. From a slightly different perspective, I have tried to bring what I feel is the essence of Half Life, to Black Mesa.
I had no prior experience composing soundtracks. Creating the sound effects was a challenge all on its own, but the music was a far greater task than I initially anticipated. Luckily for me, the lengthy development cycle gave me time to learn and experiment with a lot of different ideas.
I wanted to try new musical genres and styles in Black Mesa, while still maintaining a Half Life “feel”. A few song re-makes were attempted, but there is no point in re-making something that is already a classic. I know I risk much composing a soundtrack so different, but I am hoping the community will come to like it almost as much as the original.

I was born and raised in central Alberta, Canada. I began piano lessons at age four, and graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music, with honors, at age thirteen. (including two years of music theory) I played in a few rock bands throughout high school (but who hasn’t), and around age seventeen began seriously writing, and composing my own work. Now at age twenty-nine, I have managed to build up a respectable audio space in which I currently compose and design music and sfx for video games and indie films, record and produce for other artists, and meticulously contrive ways of destroying the rain forests.

I completed my training in Screen Music at the National Film and Television School. There is a pastoral melancholy to my pieces and an emotional current that unashamedly speaks of the human condition, Romanticism and an attempt to capture a timeless longing. I aim to create beautiful, powerful and provocative music that has a profound effect on the audience- where the music creates the sense of place and evokes unexpected emotional responses.

Simon Viklund is a long-time collaborator with brothers Bo and Ulf Andersson, having been responsible for sound effects, music and/or creative direction on all of the titles put out by both their earlier development studio Grin Inc, and their current one - Overkill Software. Simon has also worked as a freelancer for Capcom, having supplied reinterpretations for the soundtracks of several of their enhanced re-releases and downloadable titles - including the acclaimed Bionic Commando Rearmed, its sequel, as well as Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition. Simon’s primarily produces electronic music influenced by house, breaks and rock - a suitable combination of musical styles to go with the action packed and ‘bad-ass attitude’ type games he’s involved in.

Spelunky is a platformer with lots of monsters, items, traps, and secrets. Dying in Spelunky can be quick and painful, but each time you restart, you’ll play a new, randomly-generated set of levels!
Music is a combination of cute and somber jazz, over a mid-tempo beat. Heavily inspired by early 90-s video games, but also seasoned with more modern production values.
Tracks 48 - 62 are bonus tracks not found within the game. They consist of drafts, alternate versions, cut tracks and new arrangements of music from the game.

Eirik grew up playing a lot of nintendo games and music. In his early teens he started writing music for video games as a hobby. Ten years later and he was doing it commercially. His biggest project thus far was the HD reboot of Spelunky, but he has also recieved attention for his scores for Vlambeer games (Super crate Box, Radical/Ridiculous Fishing). He is currently taking on jobs as a freelancer, as well as writing music for his band Pajjama (www.pajjama.com).
