A collection of dancer’s favorites, created by Sooj in honor of the Waking Persephone festival and community- released in honor of all those who need a reason to dance - for healing, for fun, for the heck of it, on the inside or the outside, whether or not you can do so physically. This is for you.
“Without our songs and stories, we are nothing.” S. J. Tucker has been the glad captain of her own independent music career since 2004, when she left the workaday world behind to travel the continent, singing songs and changing lives. Named a vanguard of the Mythpunk movement and even “the face of neo-tribal Paganism” by Witches & Pagans Magazine, Tucker is the voice of lore at the campfire and the sharp laughter of modern myth. With one hand anchored in her art and the other held out to you, she is songs and stories, community and wit.
With over ten albums released to date and several more currently in the works, Tucker has received songwriting awards and has traveled the United States, Canada, and Europe with her music. S. J. (called “Sooj” by fans and friends) believes that there’s more than one way to be a rock star. If you’re chasing your dreams and living your life in a way that keeps you happy and healthy, Sooj believes you’ve got it made. You may often find her on tour with similarly hard-working artists and groups who believe in giving their fans all that they’ve got, such as Toronto’s Heather Dale Band, Seattle cellist Betsy Tinney (often with their shared project, Tricky Pixie), or Pride rockers Big Bad Gina.

A new concoction of fairytale folk and jazz, woven together with Southern ghost stories, strong blues influences, fantasy fiction, music-heavy web comics, and a good old-fashioned ridiculous love affair.
This release contains S. J.’s unmastered mixes and is recommended for those who want to hear it NOW, as opposed to waiting until after her mastering engineer has had time to work his magic.

People have been asking me for years when I’m going to release some seasonal music. Here is a decent, very quickly recorded version of my first Winter Solstice song, which I composed and recorded on the Longest Night. This one came out of nowhere, and it really snuck up on me! Hope you enjoy it.

“SJ Tucker, the archetypal Celtic myth-punk, conquers a lot of new territory on this soundtrack, and takes no prisoners. From ferocious “Earthling”-era David Bowie drum’n’bass sounds to the hallucinatory otherworldliness of didgeridoo and overtone flutes, this is both an unexpected departure from her previous body of work and a bold and exciting new direction. I can’t wait to hear what comes next!” -Ben Deschamps, Amphis Music, Toronto amphismusic.com
“SJ Tucker’s original music for Ember Days is deep, dark, and soul evocative. There is an eerie quality to all of the songs and a heart wrenching emotional pull from the driving beat that grows teeth and claws. This is a blending of different genres and a definite branching out from her previous work. SJ’s fans will find much to love in the soundtrack both as accompaniment to the movie and as a stand-alone album.” -Sherry Kirk, Producer, Ember Days
“Graeme Revell can shut up.” -Sean-Michael Argo, Director, Ember Days
“From chilling, beautifully composed new age sounds to the brass knuckled edge of oldschool goth-industrial tracks, this is the soundtrack every World of Darkness gamer wishes they had as they throw down their dice and dish out the aggs.” -Ryan James Loyd storytellerway.bandcamp.com

Blessings is a purely spiritual work of art. This daring album is entirely dedicated to the pagan segment of S.J.’s fanbase, and may not be appropriate for all audiences. For those that are open to alternative spiritual paths, this album is not to be missed. Blessings opens with an invocation and includes other musical passages which are both powerful and functional, such as a moving piece about the power of the labyrinth, a hymn dedicated to the male deity Herne, a pair of highly energetic tunes devoted to dance, and two playful numbers relating to Mama Dragon. Ginger Doss of Dreamtrybe and Velvet Hammer fame describes Blessings as, “The most sacred, most highly evolved body of pagan work I have ever experienced. SJ walks her path, and it shows.”
This album is now in its THIRD printing.

What if there was a place beyond terror, beyond passion, where your obsessions come to life? Where your secrets walk the streets? Where the only law is desire? What would you do to get there? Past the edge of the world lies a city of the mind and of the flesh: Palimpsest Let the music be your guide.
Palimpsest is the newest novel from Catherynne M. Valente, in stores 2/24/09. Quartered is its official companion album, and it will evolve and grow, a work in progress available via download only, as author and composer tour the United States together, across the season of Lent and beyond, from February 25 through summer 2009. Check back for new songs each week.
SONGWRITER’S NOTE JUNE 1ST 2009: “Lucia’s song, ‘Girl with the Lion’s Tail,’ is now available. Soon to come are ‘The Train Suite II: Marginalia’ and more. Keep checking back!”

Sirens, released in 2006, features S. J. at her pixie-punk and pirate best! Her third full-length album, and the most beloved of the lot by many Sooj-fans, Sirens’ tracklist crosses realm after realm and tells story after story. We open with an a cappella piece, just as on Sooj’s first album Haphazard, and then we take no prisoners, going straight into S. J.’s pagan punk anthem, “Go Away, God-boy!” The surprises continue, with S. J.’s beloved song series The Wendy Trilogy, in which Peter Pan’s Wendy learns how to be a pirate and eventually overthrows Captain Hook! This album also features the original recording of Sooj and Betsy’s classic tango, “Alligator in the House”, and “Cold Sunshine”, which was the first Sooj song that Betsy ever wrote a cello part for. S. J.’s home rag, the Memphis Flyer, named Sirens “the perfect mix of witty and weighty”, perhaps because near the end we have to grab the tissue box to get through “Valkyrie Daughter”, a memorial piece concerning Norse gods and the bond between fathers and daughters.
With S. J.’s customary whimsy and deep doses of truth, Sirens teases the shore of cold, hard reality, dancing on a tide of riddles and fantasies. We hope you like it.

S. J.’s second full-length album features “love songs, myths and sticky situations.” Released in 2005, Tangles includes what are still some of Sooj’s most popular and most-requested songs: “The Pixie Can’t Sleep” and “Baba Yaga” among them. Each track was selected for recording because it was an absolute favorite of many fans. Tangles was recorded partly in Memphis, partly in Austin with Sooj’s now foremost friend and producer, Ginger Doss. The magic in S. J.’s and Ginger’s first time working together is very apparent here. If you like layered vocal harmonies and sparse-yet-masterful musical accompaniment, then you want some Tangles in your life.

S.J.’s very first album, released on her Mom’s birthday in 2004, Haphazard is a fun, raw, masterful ride. Many happy owners of this album claim to “never get tired of listening to it” and several claim to have “nearly burned a hole in the disc, from playing it so often.” Starting with the unapologetic a cappella piece, “Cross-section”, hanging out “In the House of Mama Dragon” for a minute, getting us back in touch with our “Heart Beat” and ending with the wild grace of “Eulogy Song”, Haphazard was recorded in a single week, in Memphis, Tennessee. Accessible, fun, and honest, there’s nothing lacking in this first release. In 2014, Haphazard celebrated its tenth birthday, and this year S. J. celebrates 13 years as a full-time indie artist. That’s definitely something to sing about.
